It’s time to Get a Passion Project – In Business and In Life

Many of my clients come to me wanting to start a Mumpreneur business because they do not feel that their busy life of being mother, partner and employee has left any room for the things they feel passionate about. They want to create a more flexible lifestyle doing what they love.

While becoming a Mumpreneur in your Dream Business is a very fulfilling and satisfying occupation it also takes an enormous amount of time, energy, money and commitment.

Once I sit down and work with my clients it often becomes clear that there are many ways that they could bring passion back into their life and this is not limited to starting a business.

One of my gorgeous clients Rebecca came to me in this situation thinking about setting up her own business. Together we brainstormed a whole lot of ideas and talked about how she was feeling in her current job having recently returned to full-time work after taking maternity leave.

The interesting thing was the conversation turned to the feeling that whilst she loved being a mum and partner and was happy to stay in her current job for now she still felt this overwhelming need for SOMETHING ELSE for her!

That something else was a Passion Project and by the end of our session we had established a plan for her to write her first book, a book that is deeply personal and significant to her and a book that I for one think fills a really important gap for women. Rebecca left our session feeling enthusiastic and inspired and told me later she stayed up late that night working on her Passion Project.

Passion Projects can help provide balance, inspiration, enjoyment, relaxation and most importantly encourage you to find time for yourself and your interests. As mum’s we often get so caught up in doing things for other people such as housework, working, caring for our kids and partners that we forget to nurture the things that are important to us.

This can lead to mums feeling like they have lost the essence of who they are, what makes them unique and special, what inspires them and creates joy in their life.

The fact is we all need Passion Projects in life, but for us Mumpreneur’s it is also really fantastic to have some Passion Projects in our business. To me a business passion project is:
• A product or service you feel deeply passionate about
• Something that gives more than the financial remuneration you receive
• Something that helps people live better lives or improve their own businesses
• Something that you do for the JOY of it
• Something you can get completely lost in and makes you face light up!

I am about to Launch a business Passion Project – Mumpreneur Monday’s. Mumpreneur Monday’s will be a segment on my blog that is also publicised via my facebook page and newsletter. The aim of Mumpreneur Monday’s is to assist other Mumpreneur’s to grow their business by giving them free access to my audience to:
• Grow their business and introduce their products or services, and
• In return provide valuable tips and advice to other Mumpreneur’s to help grow own businesses and inspire budding Mumpreneurs.

There is no financial incentive for me in this blog series however, the delight I get in helping other Mumpreneur’s develop their own businesses is so amazing.

So I’d like you to set yourself a goal.

If you have a Mumpreneur business then I’d like you think of a Passion Project that you can undertake where the primarily purpose is giving back to your followers and clients or customers but something that will also give you joy!

For those who are not yet Mumpreneur’s (or for the completely work-a-holic Mumpreneurs!) I would like you to create a project that will help you express your passions in your day-to-day life, something that will bring you excitement, joy, relaxation or inspiration. Something that you do just for YOU! This could be taking an art course, learning photography, volunteering for a cause you feel passionate about or setting a goal of writing every day. The opportunities are endless it just takes a little imagination! For me my current passion project is doing the interior design for our house extension, I just love the creativity it brings out in me!

Great article Kathryn, I will take up the challenge to develop a passion project in my business to give back to my clients! Like your interior design project, my personal passion project is my vege patch! I have loved gardening all my life and always had some sort of herb pot or small vege patch going. However since my children have come along, I have made it an important project outside of motherhood/working as I enjoy it so much, and it fits in with family life (my aim to grow enough veges to feed the family without having to buy any in). I love nothing better than pottering in the vege patch with the boys, pulling a few weeds (it is actually a very relaxing activity when you have kids!), planning for the coming season from the Diggers Seed catalogue, and harvesting fresh veges for dinner!

Thanks for your comment Bec. I love your veggie patch project and look forward to doing that with Ava once our extension is finished and our backyard is not a bomb site!
